On November 17, 1969 Bruce Gowans began trading with partner Alan Ling in Devonport Tasmania, with 6 other staff. Originally trading as Ling Gowans Toyota serving the coastal town of Devonport and the surrounding rural community, the pair quickly developed a reputation for great personalised customer service and respect from the community quickly grew.
Alan Ling and Bruce Gowans began their partnership in MotorSport in the mid-sixties, then campaigning a highly developed Lotus 23B FVA sports-car. After establishing the Toyota Dealership, Bruce and Alan then turned their sporting attention to the highly competitive Australian Sport Sedan Championship, and with support from Toyota Australia raced a very unique Toyota Repco V8 Celica, which placed 3rd in the Australian Championship in 1978 behind Alan Grice and Jim Richards.
Alan and Bruce harnessed their competitive spirit through the Dealership, and were recognised a prestigious Toyota Gold Dealer in 1984. This set the pace for a rewarding decade, which culminated in Alan's retirement in 1994.
The dealership began trading as Bruce Gowans Toyota in 1994, and continuing to dominate the local market, to achieving No.1 in new vehicle sales, and winning Toyota's top award, The Toyota's Presidents Award recognising exceptional performance in overall dealer operations in 1994, 1995 & 1998.
In 2001 Bruce Gowans Toyota expanded their operations to exclusively service the surrounding areas of Ulverstone, Penguin, Burnie and Queenstown, and soon after Smithton. This was met with great success, and again being recognised by meeting Toyota's highest award: The Presidents Award for Excellence in 2002 and 2004.
At the end of 2006, Bruce decided to call it a day, and handed the day-to-day operations of the dealership to his son Adam, who previously worked as a Toyota Executive for 8 years, including a 3.5 years as an expatriate working in the global Toyota Sales & Marketing head quarters in Tokyo.
In early 2009 construction commenced to re-build on the original Ling Gowans Toyota site in Devonport, which basically stood as it did in 1969. In recognition of this milestone and continuous family ownership and values in the company, in June 2009 operations continued as Gowans Toyota.
Established for over 40 years, Gowans Toyota now employs over 55 people on 5 different sites throughout the north-west coast. Gowans Toyota will continue to provide our customers with leading personalised customer service, the foundation and cornerstone of the company back in the 60's.
Gowans Toyota is the only locally owned and operated franchised motor trader servicing the whole West and North West Coast of Tasmania, and as a local business we pride our self on community involvement.
